1. Partners

By Donald Albrecht and Barry Bergdoll
This hardcover is a historical delight perusing the friendship, influence and contributions of Alfred H Barr Jr. and Philip Johnson to American design. Bringing together applied and fine arts backgrounds, the pair introduced modernism into the American design landscape based on German Bauhaus principles. They even turned their apartments into laboratories during the Great Depression to explore museum ideology. Their ongoing quest to revitalise conceptual design led them to make MoMA the prolific art hub it is today and began a new era in museum display.
